Restoration and Conservation
Menia Restoration & Heritage
Conservation interventions at Menia are guided by several fundamental principles: respect for material integrity, minimal intervention, reversibility, material compatibility, legibility and differentiation.
Each artwork, material or support has its own characteristics and pathologies that determine the working process. Before taking action, we carry out a preliminary analysis and diagnosis, which allows us to design a specific intervention proposal.
Work process
Minimum intervention necessary to guarantee stability
The working methodology is determined specifically for each artwork, taking into account its characteristics, state of conservation and the environment in which it is located.
Preliminary examination
This consists of directly observing the entire artwork: its constituent materials, execution technique, state of conservation and visible damage.
Analysis and documentation
We photographically record the initial condition of the artwork and every detail. We document its state of conservation, identify pathologies and degradation processes. In specific cases, we carry out laboratory analysis of samples to characterize materials and alteration products.
Diagnosis. ASSESSMENT OF THE STATE OF CONSERVATION
We carry out a comprehensive analysis of the artwork, identifying the active alteration processes, their causes and the risk factors that contribute to its deterioration.
Definition of the working methodology. CRITERIA
The three previous steps define the intervention proposal and working methodology, based on a set of intervention criteria: respect for material integrity, minimal intervention, reversibility, material compatibility, legibility and differentiation.
Intervention process
The working process on the artwork comprises several stages: consolidation, cleaning, reintegration and stabilization. Each step is previously tested through trials and tests.
Maintenance and preventive conservation
Monitoring and maintaining a restored artwork is essential. We prepare recommendations to ensure its conservation: appropriate environmental conditions, handling and storage protocols, and maintenance and monitoring programmes.
